COTATI – Santa Rosa architect Jim Henderson has partnered with The Fifth Resource Inc., a firm that guides North Bay companies in planning the next steps for their real estate.

Mr. Henderson continues to operate the Santa Rosa-based architecture firm he started in 2003, now calling it Henderson Architect – The Fifth Resource. He’s blending his experience in designing and managing construction of large corporate building projects with the facilities planning experience of Jim Ford, president of The Fifth Resource.

“What Jim Ford has created with The Fifth Resource is a great model with industrial process engineering and architecture under an overall facilities planning umbrella,” Mr. Henderson said.

Earlier in his career Mr. Henderson was a corporate facilities project manager for nearly four years with Dell Computer, overseeing design, construction and management of more than 750,000 square feet of space.

That will come in handy with upcoming projects, according to Mr. Ford.

“Jim has experience in taking a business plan and a facility plan and converting it into reality,” said Mr. Ford, who at one time oversaw Optical Coating Laboratory’s large campus project in southwest Santa Rosa.

Sometimes that approach involves looking for new facilities to meet the long-term needs of a growing business. The Fifth Resource did that with Alvarado Street Bakery in the reconfiguration of the Russ Berrie toy warehouse in Petaluma into a multitenant operation. Previously, The Fifth Resource helped plan La Tortilla Factory’s expanded plant north of Santa Rosa.

Or the approach could be finding ways to make a company’s existing location work more efficiently to save money. The firm is working with the Marin Food Bank in exploring whether converting existing warehouse space in Novato could save the nonprofit group up to $3 million over a build-to-suit project.

The Fifth Resource is working with Laurus Fund on the $6 million renovation and expansion of Viansa Winery & Italian Marketplace, which could be completed next year if approved this spring.

Another wine project The Fifth Resource is tackling, with Mr. Henderson on board, is a new cooperage for VinOak, an affiliate of Cork Supply USA. The planned barrel-making facility in Benicia will be The Fifth Resource’s fifth such project after Tonnellerie Radoux USA in Santa Rosa, Demptos and Seguin Moreau in Napa, and Foster’s Wine Estates Cooperage in Cloverdale.

Santa Rosa architect Michael Palmer has been providing design services to The Fifth Resource clients since The Fifth Resource co-founder and architect Ed Sohl died suddenly two and a half years ago. Mr. Palmer will continue to consult on The Fifth Resource projects, according to Mr. Ford.

The Fifth Resource, Inc. would like to thank you all for your warm expressions of sympathy in the untimely passing of Ed Sohl. Ed was not only my partner in The Fifth Resource, Inc. from its inception in 1993 but also a best friend of 25 years.

The particular design vision that Ed brought continues as we go forward. The Fifth Resource, Inc. was founded on a principle of team work based on flexibility, incorporating the expertise of many local professionals in our work. Our vision was, and is, that each project requires a different mix of talents and it is our role to pull together the best combination for each one. We have always pursued that mission and will continue to do exactly that.

We will focus on completion of Ed's designs and continue to support our clients with facility and design solutions for your on-going needs.

Please direct any questions to me. We look forward to continuing to support you in achieving "environments for success".

Warmest regards,
